Rain leaks through roof outside Heraklion airport departures, prompting staff to use buckets

Water dripped from the roof outside the departures area at Heraklion’s “Nikos Kazantzakis” airport on Wednesday morning as rain fell over the city, according to Cretaone, which published video of the scene.

Staff placed buckets beneath the leaks to collect the rainwater and stop it from pooling on the floor, the footage shows.

Recurring issue during rainfall

The outlet described the scene as characteristic of conditions at certain points of the airport whenever rain falls, with staff needing to manage the water that gathers in the area.

Cretaone noted the leak was among the last sights greeting thousands of travelers before departing the island, calling it a less-than-positive final memory of their stay in Crete.

The incident came amid unsettled weather across the island. Cretaone had separately reported autumn-like clouds and local rain forecast for Crete earlier in the week.

Heraklion’s decades-old terminal is expected to eventually be replaced by the new airport at Kasteli. According to earlier reporting, the Kasteli airport project’s cost has risen by €455 million, drawing political criticism.
