Crete faces winds up to 8 Beaufort and rain through Thursday, EMY forecasts

Crete will see rain, increased cloud and progressively stronger winds over the coming days, with north winds strengthening to 7–8 Beaufort by midweek, according to forecasts from Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY).

The most significant change concerns wind intensity. From Tuesday, October 13, north winds are expected to strengthen noticeably, gradually reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort, while local rain and possibly strong weather phenomena are also forecast. EMY said the most intense conditions are likely to persist through Thursday, October 15, with the possibility of locally heavy rainfall on the island. The forecast follows a period in which Greece’s weather turned autumnal with rain and storms spreading across several regions.

Monday, October 12: sunshine, cloud and winds up to 6 Beaufort

EMY forecasts alternating sunshine and cloud for Crete on Monday, with a chance of local rain or showers. Winds will blow from westerly to northwesterly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, while the Cretan Sea will see westerly winds of 5 to 6 Beaufort during the day and night. Temperatures on the island are expected to range from 17 to 26 degrees Celsius, with no notable change from previous days.

Tuesday, October 13: rain and strengthening winds

Conditions are set to shift from Tuesday, as EMY forecasts increased cloud with local rain and scattered storms, mainly in western, central and southern Greece. In Crete, cloud cover and a chance of rain are expected, with winds gradually strengthening. Morning winds on the island are forecast at around 4 Beaufort, rising to 5–6 Beaufort in the afternoon and further to 6 Beaufort overnight. Nationally, temperatures are expected to fall mainly in western and northern areas, while elsewhere on Greek islands highs will reach 25 to 26 degrees Celsius.

Wednesday, October 14: winds of 6 to 8 Beaufort and possible strong rain

Wednesday is expected to bring some of the most intense weather conditions of the period for Crete. EMY forecasts increased cloud, local rain and scattered storms in the eastern parts of the country, particularly central and southern areas. The service’s general forecast notes that phenomena in Crete may be locally strong. Winds will blow from northerly directions at 5 to 7 Beaufort, reaching 8 and possibly locally 9 Beaufort in the Aegean, while wind speeds of 6 to 8 Beaufort are expected in Crete specifically. Nationwide temperatures are forecast to fall further.

Thursday, October 15: strong north winds and rain persist

The autumnal pattern is expected to continue on Thursday. EMY forecasts increased cloud with local rain in eastern, central and southern parts of the country, with particular reference to Crete, where phenomena may again be locally strong. North winds are expected to remain strong, reaching 6 to 7 and locally 8 Beaufort in the Aegean, while the forecast for Crete specifically cites north winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort. No significant change in temperature is expected compared with Wednesday. The forecast comes after Crete’s storms eased following recent flooding, though forecasters have warned that saturated ground keeps flood risk elevated.

Saharan dust gradually retreating Monday

Meanwhile, EMY forecasts a gradual weakening of the Saharan dust transport on Monday, October 12, with remaining concentrations expected mainly over the Aegean islands and Crete. The eastward movement of the barometric system is expected to help limit the phenomenon, with dust transport forecast to decrease significantly by Monday afternoon. Separately, mud rain is forecast in Macedonia, the North Aegean islands and the Dodecanese. The forecast follows a period in which the island recorded some of Greece’s lowest temperatures earlier in the month.
