Agia Irini Gorge in Chania reopens Saturday after storm closure

The Municipality of Kantanos-Selinos has announced that Agia Irini Gorge, in the municipal unit of East Selino, will reopen to visitors on Saturday, October 10, 2026, following a temporary closure caused by heavy rainfall in previous days.

The gorge had been shut as a precaution during a period of severe weather affecting the area. According to an earlier report, officials had said at the time that the gorge would remain closed until Sunday, October 11, meaning it has now reopened a day earlier than initially announced.

Municipality’s statement

In its announcement, the municipality thanked visitors for their understanding during the closure and wished everyone “beautiful and safe routes” on the trail.

The reopening restores access to one of several gorges in Crete that attract hikers through the autumn, following a stretch of storms that disrupted outdoor activity and infrastructure across the island in recent days.
