Lasithi closes section of BOAK highway for two days near Xiropotamos bridge

Traffic restrictions will take effect on the BOAK highway in Lasithi on Tuesday, August 18, and Wednesday, August 19, due to works deemed necessary near the Xiropotamos bridge, according to project officials.

Emergency geotechnical conditions arose during excavation works at kilometer marker 8+300, prompting authorities to suspend traffic on the existing BOAK on both days, from 09:00 to 17:00.

The goal of the works is to remove unstable rock masses, officials said, in order to ensure the safe completion of the project and the continued circulation of vehicles.

Alternative routes during the closure

During the suspension, small vehicles and buses traveling from Neapoli to Agios Nikolaos will be diverted via the Old National Road, then through Lakonia and the Kritsa junction before reaching Agios Nikolaos. Drivers planning trips along this corridor may want to review other driving routes across Crete before setting out.

Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, from Agios Nikolaos to Neapoli, will use the Old National Road exclusively.

Heavy vehicles will continue to use the existing BOAK throughout the closure. To accommodate them, works will be periodically paused and the road reopened at intervals during the day, officials said. Visitors arriving in the area, including those rent a car in Crete for their travels, should plan for possible delays during the affected hours.

Project officials asked for the understanding and cooperation of drivers for the duration of the emergency traffic measures.
