Agios Nikolaos to begin coastal road works restoring two-way traffic on November 16

The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos has announced that works to restore two-way traffic on the coastal road Stylianou Koundourou will begin on Monday, November 16, following approvals from the relevant public services.

According to the municipality, the works are scheduled to start after the end of the tourist season, in line with the municipal regulation governing the timing of disruptive construction activity. The project will be carried out in sections to limit disruption to daily life in the area.

Temporary construction signage and safety barriers will be installed at the work sites, the municipality said. Temporary traffic regulations will be applied gradually, and parking will be banned only in the specific sections where works are underway at any given time.

Sequence of works

The municipality outlined the works in four stages: removal of additional concrete extensions on the roadway; cleaning and preparation of the surface along with relocation or adjustment of stormwater drainage wells; laying of new asphalt on the affected lane; and installation of vertical and horizontal signage along with the remaining elements of the final traffic layout.

Restoring two-way traffic on the coastal road is described by the municipality as a key commitment of the current municipal administration, one it says has been requested by the majority of residents. The municipality expects the change to help improve traffic flow in the town.

Officials said that reopening Stylianou Koundourou to traffic in both directions would create an additional route out of the town, alongside Konstantinou Palaiologou street, serving both the port area and the direction of Elounda. The municipality said this is intended to ease congestion in the town, particularly at the junction near the hospital, while also improving access to the port and its activities.

Part of a wider waterfront upgrade

The municipality describes this intervention as the first step toward a broader upgrade of the Agios Nikolaos waterfront. A subsequent phase is expected to bring a full renovation of the Stylianou Koundourou coastal road, for which funding has already been secured, based on a study that incorporates two-way traffic. Agios Nikolaos has recently approved other development projects in the area as part of ongoing municipal planning decisions.

The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos asked residents and businesses for understanding and cooperation during the temporary disruption expected while the works are carried out. It added that the aim is to complete each section of the project as quickly and safely as possible so that the coastal road can return to two-way operation at the earliest opportunity.
