Crete photography exhibition on Sfakianes Madares draws strong public interest

Visitors of all ages continue touring the “Apocosmos” photography exhibition in Heraklion, which features rare images of the Sfakianes Madares, the remote mountain range in western Crete, organizers said.

The exhibition by researcher and photojournalist Giorgos Patroudakis is being held at the historic Church of Agios Petros of the Dominicans, known locally as Bedenaki, in Heraklion. Organizers reported particularly strong interest from local residents, Greek visitors and foreign tourists in the show. It is open daily, including weekends, from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 10pm.

Patroudakis, who has spent 30 years photographing the Sfakianes Madares, is present at the venue each day to welcome visitors. Through his images, he presents what he describes as a different world, one that appears removed from ordinary time and place. Readers interested in the region can also explore Crete’s gorges for other landscapes of the island’s wilder interior.

Opening and organizers

The exhibition opened with the Archbishop, the regional governor, mayors, institutional representatives and artists in attendance, alongside a large crowd of visitors. It is organized jointly by the Region of Crete, the Archdiocese, the Parish of Agios Dimitrios (Limenos) and the Municipality of Sfakia.

The show will remain open to the public until November 4. Those planning a visit to Heraklion during the exhibition’s run can find more options among the island’s experiences in Crete. A separate feature on the same body of work, covering its 30-year photographic record of the Sfakian Madares, is available on Heraklion’s exhibition presenting the photography project.
