Heraklion’s ‘Summer 2026’ festival closes with 146 events and 82 film screenings
The Municipality of Heraklion’s Deputy Mayoralty of Culture has closed out the “Heraklion – Summer 2026” festival, which ran from June 22 to September 27 and staged 146 cultural events alongside 82 film screenings, the municipality said.
The festival’s venues included the Nikos Kazantzakis and Manos Hatzidakis garden theatres, the Mikis Theodorakis Open Theatre, the Bethlehem Gate and the Bethlehem Summer Cinema, according to the organizers. The program was made up of 47 concerts, 57 theatrical productions, 21 children’s theatre performances, 7 dance shows and 7 music-and-dance events, in addition to the film screenings at the Municipal Summer Cinema. Of these, 65 events had free admission, which the municipality described as reflecting its approach to inclusive access to culture.
In June, the program featured performances by the city’s dance schools and theatrical presentations from the “Student Festival.” From July through September, the festival hosted major theatrical productions that had also appeared at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, along with concerts by well-known performers and composers. The 3rd Festival of the Walls, organized by the Municipality of Heraklion, was also presented again this year. The program was rounded out with productions from the Region of Crete, cultural organizations and local artistic groups.
At the Bethlehem Summer Municipal Cinema, 47 films — 31 feature-length and 16 short films — were shown across 82 screenings, 11 of which were free to attend. Audiences watched contemporary international fiction and live-action films as well as re-releases of older classics that continued to draw interest, with several screenings selling out, according to the municipality. Other program strands, including animation, documentaries and a cine-opera collaboration with the Greek National Opera, also attracted significant attendance.
A number of screenings were organized in cooperation with scientific and cultural bodies, among them the Heraklion Association of Architects, the Kazantzakis Museum, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Honorary Consulate of Italy in Heraklion, the Positively Different Short Film Festival, the Educational Development Navigator with the International Organization for Migration, and the group Omada gia tin Alli Ygeia.
The Deputy Mayoralty of Culture and Deputy Mayor Rena Papadaki-Skalidi thanked the municipal administration, the public, participating artists and collaborators, staff at the garden theatres and across the municipality, as well as the Hellenic Red Cross, the humanitarian crisis management group Epidrasis, the Hellenic Police, the Fire Service, the National Center for Emergency Care and the festival’s sponsors for their support in running the event.
The municipality said it would return with a new edition of the festival in the summer of 2027.
