Heraklion Port Authority raises readiness as strong north winds, 37°C heat hit Crete

The Central Port Authority of Heraklion has moved to increased readiness ahead of weather conditions expected on Monday, August 24, marked mainly by strong north winds, the authority announced.

According to the announcement, based on a forecast issued Sunday, August 23 by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the Cyclades and Crete will see generally clear skies, but winds will blow from northerly directions at force 5 to 6 on the Beaufort scale, locally reaching 7. Temperatures are expected to range from 25 to 33-34 degrees Celsius, with Crete specifically expected to reach 36 to 37 degrees, following high temperatures already recorded on Sunday.

In response to the forecast, the Central Port Authority of Heraklion is calling on all owners of moored vessels and small boats within its jurisdiction to take all appropriate measures to ensure their safe mooring.

The authority also recommends that commercial fishing vessels, pleasure craft and small boats avoid operating during the period when the weather conditions are expected to prevail. Tugboats, lifeguard boats, fishing vessels and volunteer groups have been asked to remain on immediate standby so they can assist if required.

Advice for residents and mariners

The Port Authority is also urging the public to monitor weather bulletins and announcements from the relevant authorities regularly and not to put their lives at risk under any circumstances during hazardous weather phenomena. The heightened alert comes as authorities separately flagged Monday as a day of high wildfire risk across the island.

Personnel and available vessels and land equipment of the Central Port Authority of Heraklion have been placed on standby to respond to any incidents and to provide assistance to ships, small boats and individuals who may find themselves in danger.
