Heraklion port handles over 52,000 arrivals in 10 days amid August rush

Traffic at the port of Heraklion has surged to peak levels, with more than 52,000 passengers arriving between August 1 and 10, according to port data. The increase covers both routes to and from Piraeus and ferry connections to the Cyclades.

Passenger traffic was especially high over the three-day period from Friday, August 7, to Sunday, August 9, when a total of 36 ship arrivals and departures were recorded, carrying 32,163 passengers and 6,138 private vehicles.

Over 52,000 passengers arrive in Heraklion

Data for the period from August 1 to 10 show the scale of activity at the port. Ship arrivals totaled 47, bringing 52,381 passengers and 11,543 private vehicles into Heraklion. Over the same period, 45 ship departures carried 33,379 passengers and 5,165 private vehicles away from the port.

This level of traffic is expected to continue in the coming days, as the region is now at the peak of the exodus for the mid-August holiday (Dekapentavgoustos).

Forecast through August 16

For the period from August 11 to 16, port authorities estimate around 31 ship arrivals, bringing approximately 32,000 passengers and 6,000 private vehicles to Heraklion. Another 31 departures are scheduled, with estimated passenger traffic reaching 27,000.

Daily ferry routes to the port of Piraeus, scheduled for August 12, 13, 14 and 16, are expected to play a significant role in meeting the increased demand.

Return wave expected after mid-August

From August 16 onward, the pattern at the port is expected to gradually reverse, as the wave of arrivals gives way to a wave of departing travelers. Estimates point to a rising number of passengers leaving Heraklion for Piraeus, as a significant share of holidaymakers begin their return journey after the mid-August holiday.
