Greece issues yellow fire-risk alert for Crete on Tuesday, August 11
Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection, part of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, has placed Crete under a yellow, or elevated, fire-risk alert for Tuesday, August 11, 2026, according to its daily Fire Risk Forecast Map published on civilprotection.gov.gr.
The same forecast map lists a very high fire-risk warning, category 4, for several other parts of the country: the region of Attica, including the island of Kythira; the region of the Peloponnese, in the regional units of Corinthia, Argolis and Laconia; the region of Central Greece, in the regional units of Boeotia, Phthiotis and Evia, including the island of Skyros; the region of the North Aegean, in the regional units of Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria; and the region of the South Aegean, in the regional units of the Cyclades.
The Civil Protection Secretariat said it has notified the relevant state agencies, regions and municipalities in the areas under very high risk, asking them to remain on heightened alert so they can respond immediately to any fire outbreaks.
Safety guidance for residents
The Secretariat urged the public to be especially careful and to avoid outdoor activities that could accidentally start a fire, such as burning dry grass, branches or cleanup debris, using spark-producing equipment like circular saws or welding tools, using outdoor grills, smoking out beehives, or discarding lit cigarettes. It also reminded residents that burning agricultural fields is prohibited during the fire season.
