Fuel prices in Heraklion hover near €2 per liter as Brent climbs above $84

Fuel prices in the regional unit of Heraklion remain close to the €2-per-liter threshold, even as international oil markets turn upward again, with Brent crude surpassing $84 a barrel.

According to figures reported on August 10, the average price of unleaded gasoline in Heraklion stands at €1.99 per liter, rising by 3 to 4 cents in inland areas due to transport costs. The average price of diesel fuel is €1.97 per liter.

No major change expected before August 15

Despite the high pump prices, market sources cited by neakriti.gr say no significant change is expected before the August 15 holiday (Dekapentavgoustos), provided there is no new geopolitical escalation.

Attention in the market is turning to developments involving former US President Donald Trump and signs of efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. According to the report, the market considers that a genuine prospect of normalizing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could ease pressure on international prices and, by extension, on the Greek fuel market.

Brent crude tops $84 a barrel

International oil markets remain volatile. Brent crude futures rose more than 1%, surpassing $84 a barrel, while US crude contracts recorded a similar increase. This marked the third consecutive day of gains, with investors closely watching the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has announced it is in the final stages of an agreement with Oman to establish new shipping lanes. However, Tehran has said that reopening the strategic maritime route is linked to meeting specific demands from the United States.

Why pump prices lag behind Brent movements

A rise in international Brent prices does not automatically translate into an equivalent increase at the pump, since retail prices are affected by delays in inventory renewal, supply costs, taxation and market margins. Similarly, a drop in international oil prices takes time to be fully reflected in prices seen by consumers.

In early August, a fall in Brent below $83 had raised expectations of price easing, while the activation of a subsidy of 10 cents per liter on diesel added a further downward pressure factor.

Outlook toward August 15

Based on current data, the fuel market in Heraklion appears headed toward the August 15 holiday without major fluctuations, with unleaded and diesel prices remaining just below the €2-per-liter mark.

The key uncertainty remains geopolitical developments. Market estimates suggest that if efforts to end the crisis and normalize shipping through the Strait of Hormuz progress, this would create a stabilizing environment for prices and help avoid new pressure at the pump.

For drivers in Crete, the immediate concern is not a significant price drop but rather avoiding a new increase during the peak of the tourist season and the August 15 travel period.
