Faithful bring countless votive offerings to Agkarathos Monastery on Assumption Day

Crowds of pilgrims visited the Holy Monastery of Agkarathos, one of Crete’s most historic monasteries, on August 15 to mark the Dormition of the Theotokos (Assumption of the Virgin Mary), lighting candles and leaving votive offerings known as “tamata” in gratitude or in petition to the Virgin Mary.

According to Cretalive, the numerous offerings left by worshippers reflect a longstanding relationship between pilgrims and the monastery. Some visitors come to ask for the Virgin Mary’s help, while others return to give thanks for a vow made during a difficult period in their lives.

A monastery with historical significance

The Holy Monastery of Agkarathos holds a distinct place in the ecclesiastical history of Crete, having produced bishops, saints and scholars over the centuries, according to the report.

The monastery is also linked to the icon of the Virgin Mary “the Orphan” (Panagia i Orfani), which, according to tradition, was smuggled to Kythira after the fall of Chandax (Heraklion) to the Ottomans. The icon is said to have been taken by Meletios Kallonas.

Dormition of the Theotokos

The monastery also houses an icon of the Dormition of the Theotokos, along with an icon of the Virgin Mary “the Nursing Mother” (Panagia i Galaktotrofousa). As part of the Assumption Day observances, a night vigil is held at the monastery.

Each year, the feast draws hundreds of faithful to the historic monastery, where the votive offerings left before the icons reflect a tradition of faith passed down through generations, according to Cretalive.
