Crete wins four awards at Education Leaders Awards 2026 for tradition-innovation project
The Region of Crete has received four awards at the Education Leaders Awards 2026 for a joint project connecting Orthodox religious tradition with digital innovation, the regional authority said.
The winning proposal, titled “Living Tradition and Cultural Innovation in Crete,” was developed through a partnership between the School of Theology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the LOOX Organization for Research, Innovation and Culture, the Holy Monasteries of Toplou and Koudouma, and the Region of Crete.
The project received two Gold Awards, in the categories “Innovative Educational Programs” and “Lifelong Learning through Digital and Hybrid Models,” and two Silver Awards, in the categories “Original Research Project” and “Collaboration with Businesses and Community,” according to the Region of Crete.
Two pillars: Toplou and Koudouma
The initiative is built around two main strands: the “Iconography 2.0” program at the Holy Monastery of Toplou and the “Asterousia Polity” program at the Holy Monastery of Koudouma. Through these activities, Orthodox ecclesiastical tradition is linked with contemporary art, research and digital technology, the Region of Crete said.
At the Holy Monastery of Toplou, the historic fortified monastery was turned into a digital laboratory, showcasing monumental iconography through applications of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and 3D scanning.
At the Holy Monastery of Koudouma, the “Asterousia Polity” functions as a summer school and arts workshop, focusing on eco-theology, cultural heritage preservation and social care, while reviving the region’s scholarly tradition associated with Joseph Philagris.
More than 900 beneficiaries
According to the Region of Crete, the awards’ evaluation committee recognized the strong social and cultural impact of the activities, which attracted more than 900 direct beneficiaries, including academics, students, artists, pupils and residents of Crete.
The Region of Crete congratulated all participating organizations and members of the academic community, as well as the Holy Metropolises of Ierapytna and Sitia, and of Gortyna and Arkadia, for their cooperation. The regional authority said the recognition confirms that culture serves as a key development resource for the island, linking Crete’s historical identity with sustainable development, education and innovation.
