Crete hiking group Dromoi Zois plans hikes and canyoning trip for August 23

The Crete-based hiking group Dromoi Zois (“Roads of Life”) has announced a program of hiking, swimming and canyoning excursions for Sunday, August 23, 2026, offering participants several route options in the island’s southern region.
According to the group’s announcement, participants can choose among four options for the day. The first involves swimming, relaxation, coffee and food at Tsoutsouros. The second is a hike to Maridaki, described as taking around one hour and thirty minutes with a listed difficulty grade of 1, followed by swimming.
A third, optional extension continues from Maridaki to the Agios Nikitas monastery and the Phoinikodasos palm forest, before returning for a swim at either Maridaki or Tsoutsouros. The group estimates this longer route at around three hours and thirty minutes, also rated difficulty grade 1.
Canyoning option added
The fourth option is a canyoning descent through a gorge in the area, which the organizers describe as suitable for both beginners and experienced participants, citing views of Crete’s southern coastline. Readers interested in similar outdoor routes can find more listed under gorges in Crete.
Dromoi Zois said departure is set for 08:00 on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from the site of the Saturday street market in the Agia Anna area of Heraklion. The group noted that its excursions take place in non-urban terrain and that participants should bring equipment suited to the terrain and season.
Registration and terms
The group asks that registrations be made only by phone, at 2816007430 or 6947504650, or in person, with contact hours Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00. According to the announcement, participation fees must be settled by Friday afternoon, and cancellations are accepted until Saturday at 13:00; members who register but do not show up remain liable for the participation cost.
Dromoi Zois said the published program is indicative and may be changed without prior notice if organizers judge it necessary for the smooth running of the excursion. The outing is one of a number of guided experiences in Crete run by local groups during the summer season, often combining walking routes with stops at beaches in Crete for swimming.
