Chania airport passenger traffic tops 3.1 million so far in 2026
More than 3.18 million passengers passed through Chania’s “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” airport between the start of 2026 and the end of August, according to Fraport Greece, the company that manages the facility. The figure compares with 2,933,219 passengers recorded over the same period in 2025.
In August alone, traffic at the Chania airport rose 6.3% compared with the same month last year, with approximately 776,000 passengers using the airport during the month, Fraport Greece said.
Britain topped international arrivals in August with 120,433 passengers, followed by Greece with 118,708 and Germany with 80,912, according to the company’s figures. July remained the busiest month of the year so far, with 790,941 passengers recorded, ahead of August’s total.
Growth across regional airports
The increase in Chania mirrors a wider trend at the 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece. The company reported that 7.1 million passengers used these airports in August 2026, a 5.1% rise compared with August 2025.
Domestic traffic across the network reached about 968,000 passengers, up 5.7%, while international traffic reached 6.2 million passengers, an increase of 5%, Fraport Greece said. Since 2017, when the company took over management of the 14 regional airports, more than 280 million passengers have traveled through them, according to the company.
The rise in air traffic comes as Crete continues to see high visitor numbers across sectors; Chania’s cruise ports have also reported a surge in passengers this year, with more than 214,895 cruise passengers passing through the city’s ports by August. Regional data have separately pointed to uneven overtourism pressure across the island as overall arrivals hit record highs.
