BOAK to close for two days near Xiropotamos bridge for rock removal work

Crete Locals News

The existing Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) will be temporarily closed to traffic near the Xiropotamos bridge on Monday, August 10, and Tuesday, August 11, 2026, according to contractor AKTOR, which is carrying out the road’s construction works.

AKTOR said the closure is necessary due to emergency geotechnical conditions in the area of excavation works at kilometer point 8+300 of the project, near the Xiropotamos bridge. The company said the work involves removing unstable rock masses that pose a safety risk.

The closures will run both days from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Alternative routes during the closure

According to AKTOR, small vehicles and buses travelling from Neapoli towards Agios Nikolaos will be diverted via the Old National Road, then through Lakonia and the Kritsa junction to Agios Nikolaos.

Small vehicles and buses travelling from Agios Nikolaos towards Neapoli will be routed exclusively via the Old National Road.

Heavy vehicles will continue to use the existing BOAK, with work periodically pausing to allow the road to reopen during the day, AKTOR said.

The company thanked drivers for their understanding and cooperation during the works.
