Wildfire near Prinias in Heraklion prompts Fire Service mobilization
The Heraklion Fire Service mobilized firefighting forces on Friday afternoon after a wildfire broke out near Prinias, in the Gortyna municipality, in the Heraklion region’s interior.
The alarm was raised around midday on Friday, the Heraklion Fire Service said. Fire vehicles and personnel were dispatched to the area to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading.
According to the Fire Brigade, the blaze broke out on agricultural and forest land at a location known as Perdikokorfi, within the Gortyna municipality. As firefighting operations continued, the situation reportedly improved and the fire was brought under control, though crews remained on site.
In a post on social media, the Fire Brigade said 30 firefighters were mobilized along with two ground teams from the 3rd Special Disaster Response Unit (EMODE), eight vehicles and one helicopter.
Elevated fire risk across Crete
The wildfire near Prinias came on a day of heightened fire danger across Crete. Authorities have closed forests, gorges and trails under a “Red Code” wildfire alert in several areas of the island in recent days as conditions remained extreme.
Other blazes have also been reported around Crete this month, including a wildfire in the Messara region that triggered a 112 emergency alert and a separate blaze in low vegetation near Zoniana that firefighters were called to tackle.
