Phaistos mayor joins Crete regional funding meeting on 2026-2030 development program
Mayors and officials from municipalities across Eastern Crete, including Phaistos Mayor Grigoris Nikolidakis, attended a working meeting on the Region of Crete’s Regional Development Program (PPA) for 2026-2030, focused on funding opportunities and development priorities for the new programming period.
The meeting was organized by Region of Crete Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis together with the region’s Managing Authority for the 2026-2030 Regional Development Program. Alongside Nikolidakis, mayors, representatives and technical service staff from the participating municipalities took part.
According to the region, the session aimed to improve coordination between the Region of Crete and municipal authorities, record local needs and prepare projects that could be submitted for funding. Officials said the involvement of technical staff was important, since the meeting went beyond a briefing to include an exchange of views and the presentation of each municipality’s priorities.
€2 million in initial funding per municipality
A central point raised at the meeting was an initial allocation of €2 million per municipality, intended to support projects that could move forward quickly to the tender stage. The region said timely use and absorption of the available funds is a key goal, since effective implementation of projects already proposed by each municipality could help secure additional funding later.
For the Municipality of Phaistos, officials said this funding represents an important financial tool for advancing projects already identified as local needs and priorities.
Mayor cites opportunity for infrastructure projects
Nikolidakis said the new programming period creates significant opportunities for municipalities and that it is their responsibility to make use of them through proper planning and clear priorities. He said the €2 million in first-phase funding gives the Municipality of Phaistos an important opportunity to proceed with needed projects and address infrastructure and everyday issues, and added that timely implementation and absorption of the funds is crucial for the municipality to be able to seek further funding in the next stage.
The meeting follows similar recent moves by the Region of Crete to channel funding toward local infrastructure, such as its approval of a plan for new urban beaches at Heraklion’s Dermatas Bay, while other municipalities, including Minoa Pediada, have also been pressing regional and national authorities on funding and support issues.
