Lifeguard rescues child caught in current at Mononaftis beach in Heraklion
A lifeguard rescued a child who was swept away from the designated swimming area by a current at Mononaftis beach in Heraklion on Sunday, September 13, according to Cretalive.
The child had crossed beyond the marker buoy and was being carried toward rocks when lifeguard Lefteris Kartsakis, of the Kladou Lifeguard School, spotted the danger and moved to intervene, the report said.
Kartsakis reached the child and guided them safely back to the shore, preventing the situation from escalating further, according to the source.
The child’s parents embraced the lifeguard afterward to express their relief and gratitude, and then embraced their child, Cretalive reported.
The incident highlights the role lifeguards play on beaches in Crete, where training and quick response can be critical in emergencies at sea. It follows other recent water-related incidents on the island, including a fire service rescue of injured tourists in Chania and Rethymno.
