Heavy rain floods Heraklion streets as EMY yellow alert remains in force until 3pm

Heavy rain flooded roads in Heraklion on Thursday morning, slowing commuter traffic as bad weather continued to affect the city.
Morning commuters heading to work and parents driving children to school faced heavy rainfall, with water pooling across several streets.
According to meteorologists, showers are expected to continue intermittently, mainly during the morning and midday hours. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued a yellow alert for rain across Crete through Thursday, in effect until 3pm.
Strong winds at sea
Strong winds reaching up to 9 Beaufort are also blowing at sea, and the Heraklion Central Port Authority has warned boat owners to take precautions. The port authority’s advisory follows an earlier warning this week over conditions that the Heraklion Port Authority described as hazardous for vessels.
Drivers are being urged to exercise particular caution, reduce their speed, keep safe following distances, and avoid driving through areas where large amounts of water have accumulated.
The Municipality of Malevizi, which borders Heraklion, had separately warned residents of heavy rain and storms persisting through Thursday, a forecast consistent with the conditions reported by the Malevizi municipal authority this week.
