Heavy rain floods central Heraklion streets, hampering pedestrians and drivers

Heavy rainfall on October 2 flooded streets in central Heraklion, leaving stretches of road under water near the entrance to Georgiadis Park and hampering pedestrians and drivers, according to photographs sent to Cretalive.gr by a reader.
The images show pools of water collecting at the edge of the roadway, with parked cars and motorbikes partly submerged and both pedestrian and vehicle traffic disrupted. The reader who submitted the photos said the images “capture a serious problem in the management of rainwater in the city,” noting that a large section of the road had been covered by water.
The resident questioned whether “the existing drainage infrastructure and flood-protection measures are adequate to protect residents and property,” according to the comments relayed to Cretalive.gr.
Part of a wider storm pattern across Crete
The flooding in Heraklion’s city center came as heavy rain continued to affect several parts of Crete. Authorities had already warned of a new storm system bringing heavy rain to the island in the days before the Heraklion flooding was reported, and the national weather service had issued an orange warning for Crete as storms and heavy rain affected Greece more broadly.
In central Heraklion, the municipality has separately flagged infrastructure concerns in recent weeks, with the deputy mayor saying that 300 buildings have been flagged as dangerous after debris fell onto city streets.
