Greece designates wildfire-hit areas in Rethymno, activates state housing aid

The Greek government has formally delineated areas damaged by wildfires in July and August 2026, including several communities in the Municipality of Agios Vasileiou in Rethymno, through a joint decision by the Ministers of National Economy and Finance, Interior, and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, published in the Government Gazette. The decision activates the state housing assistance framework for damaged buildings and a temporary housing subsidy for affected households.

According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the decision marks a step toward direct support for residents and local communities affected by the fires, putting into effect the institutional framework for restoring damaged buildings and covering temporary housing needs.

The ministry said the process for fires that broke out in late July and on August 1, 2026 was completed particularly quickly, with the delineation and activation of state aid measures finalized in under one month from the events.

The total budgeted expenditure under the decision is approximately €9.79 million, of which about €9.54 million covers free state aid and inspection costs, and about €246,000 covers the temporary housing subsidy.

Deputy minister cites faster procedures

Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados, who oversees state aid matters, said the completion of the delineation process and immediate activation of the state aid framework represents an important step toward addressing the needs of residents and local communities more quickly and effectively.

Katsafados added that, specifically for the fires of late July and August 1, the process was completed in under a month, calling it a significant acceleration of administrative procedures. He said the goal was to minimize delays and speed up support reaching affected residents, and noted that the restoration process is proceeding in cooperation with the relevant ministries, the General Directorate for Restoration of Natural Disaster Impacts, regional authorities and municipalities.

Seven regional units included

The decision covers affected areas across seven regional units: Thessaloniki, Achaia, Boeotia, Phocis, West Attica, Argolis, and Rethymno.

In the Rethymno regional unit, the delineated areas are the communities of Akoumia, Ardaktos, Lampini, Melampes and Saktouria, as well as Asomatos and Lefkogeia, all within the Municipality of Agios Vasileiou, covering damage from the fire of July 29, 2026. Inspections in Rethymno previously found dozens of buildings with severe damage following the blaze, while Preveli’s palm forest, located in the same municipality, is expected to show signs of recovery within a few years, according to a botanist cited earlier by Cretalive.

Aid terms and deadlines

In the designated areas, housing assistance for the reconstruction or repair of damaged buildings is provided as 100% free state aid, without the interest-free loan component backed by the Greek state. Reconstruction of homes carries support of up to €1,000 per square meter, with corresponding amounts set for other building categories and for repairs, depending on the type and extent of damage.

A temporary housing subsidy is also available to households whose primary residence has been damaged and is not currently habitable. The rental subsidy ranges from €300 to €500 per month depending on household size, or 50% of the corresponding amount in cases of shared housing.

Owners of damaged buildings who wish to request a site inspection must submit an application to the competent authority within one month of the decision’s publication. Issuance of a certificate designating beneficiaries of reconstruction housing assistance is subject to a six-month deadline from receipt of the relevant inspection reports, depending on the case. A repair permit must likewise be issued within six months, counted either from the decision’s publication or from receipt of the inspection report, depending on the circumstances.
