A video filmed at Balos beach in Chania has gone viral, surpassing 820,000 views within 24 hours and showing an unprecedented level of crowding at the height of the summer tourist season.

The footage, shared on social media, shows a large number of visitors gathered at the landing point, forming a long queue along a narrow metal jetty and the shoreline. Tourists wearing swimwear, hats and backpacks are shown standing side by side as they wait to move through the confined passage, with an even larger crowd visible in the background.

The video’s creator captioned the clip in English, “Arriving at the natural wonder of Balos Beach in August,” a comment posted in a humorous tone that contrasts the beach’s famous turquoise waters and landscape with the dense crowd shown in the footage.

A well-known destination under pressure

Balos has for years been one of Crete’s most visited destinations, drawing thousands of visitors daily during the summer months. Local authorities have previously closed the route to Balos due to wildfire risk, and the area was also the starting point of a hike that ended in the death of a French tourist earlier this month amid a heatwave.

Unlike the postcard-style images typically associated with Balos, the video captures the reality of peak tourist season, with large numbers of visitors converging on specific points at the same time. The clip has renewed discussion around visitor management at sites of exceptional natural beauty, a debate that has also surrounded other popular spots such as Elafonissi beach in recent weeks.

The scenes in the video stand in contrast to expectations of Balos as a quiet, near-empty beach in August, offering instead a picture of one of Crete’s most visited beaches under significant seasonal pressure.
