Authorities close forests, gorges and trails across Crete under ‘Red Code’ wildfire alert

Greek authorities have declared a “Red Code” — the highest wildfire-risk alert — for Crete today, closing forests, gorges and hiking trails across the island, according to a report by Neakriti.

Under the alert, public access to wooded areas and marked footpaths is prohibited until the warning is lifted, the report said. The closures include popular gorges across the island, extending precautions taken in recent weeks as Crete has repeatedly been placed under elevated fire-danger ratings.

Crete has faced several elevated fire-risk alerts this month. Authorities also increased patrols after a day rated very high wildfire risk earlier in the week, before today’s Red Code declaration.
