Agios Nikolaos cliff diving competition opens with 17 divers over Lake Voulismeni

The eighth edition of the Agios Nikolaos Cliff Diving competition opened on Saturday, September 19, at Lake Voulismeni, with divers performing jumps from a platform positioned more than 20 metres above the water.

A total of 17 divers from Europe and the United States are taking part in the two-day event, running through Sunday, September 20, according to organizers. The competition has taken place for eight consecutive years and has become one of the town’s signature sporting fixtures each September.

Agios Nikolaos is hosting several public events this month. The town’s harbor is also scheduled to hold the Cretan Cooking Festival 2026 later in September, according to earlier municipal reporting.

Lake setting draws spectators

Organizers said the layout of Lake Voulismeni allows spectators to watch the dives from close range, a feature that has defined the competition since it began. The current weekend follows earlier coverage of the eighth Cliff Diving competition ahead of the event.

Local authorities regularly publish updates on cultural and sporting activities across the island. Details of other upcoming events in Crete are available through official municipal and regional channels.
