Beaches in and around Drakona
Drakona has no beach of its own, because the village sits inland in the mountain foothills. The coast lies north, along the Chania waterfront, and the closest beach we publish is Nea Chora on the western edge of the city.
Nea Chora is a sandy beach a kilometre west of Chania city centre, on Akti Papanikoli Street and facing the Lazaretta islet. A 15-minute stroll separates it from the old harbour of Chania, and the main stretch is well maintained with several facilities on hand, though the sand carries rocky patches in places. East of the beach stand the chimney of the old soap factory and the former sanatorium of Chania, and the seafront is known among local people for its seafood taverns, with restaurants, snack bars and cafés alongside.
