Heraklion Installs Smart Parking System With 800 New Spaces
Heraklion is installing a smart parking system with 800 new spaces around the city’s perimeter as part of the Smart Cities project.
The installation includes parking sensors and road markings, and it completes one of the two remaining interventions in the 12-part project. The project was selected by the previous municipal administration, then contracted and implemented by the current city leadership.
The other outstanding intervention concerns the installation of multifunctional public-service columns.
Deputy Mayor for Finance and Development Planning Tasos Tsatsakis addressed the smart parking project at the latest meeting of the Heraklion Municipal Council, noting the tight deadlines for its completion.
Tsatsakis said the municipality was approaching the deadline for the financial and physical components funded through the Recovery Fund, and he described the timetable as demanding.
The operating rules for the 800 parking spaces have not yet been finalized. According to Tsatsakis, a regulatory decision will set the rules. The Traffic Committee will review the decision first, then the Municipal Council will consider it, and a public consultation will follow before the final terms of use are approved.
