Minoa Palace Resort

Minoa Palace Resort is a five-star resort at the western end of Platanias, about 12 km west of Chania, with an aerial footbridge carrying guests over the coast road to its beach side. Minoa Palace pairs its original main building with the newer Imperial Wing added in 2008, and guests score it 9.0 out of 10 on Booking.com and 4.6 out of 5 on Tripadvisor across 2,006 reviews. Our verdict lands at 8.5 out of 10: one of the most polished operations on the Platanias strip, with the split site and half-board extras the honest caveats.

Who Minoa Palace suits, and who should skip it

Minoa Palace suits couples and families who want a five-star base with Platanias’s bars, shops, and tavernas in walking distance, and it suits them because the resort delivers resort-grade calm while the town handles the evenings. The lists below come from recurring themes in the resort’s 2,006 Tripadvisor reviews and 386 Booking.com reviews.

Advantages

  • Cleanliness scored 4.8 out of 5, the resort’s headline number
  • Service scored 4.7, with guest relations named warmly in reviews
  • Imperial Wing rooms closer to the sea and newer than the main building
  • Long sandy Platanias beach across the resort’s own footbridge
  • Theme nights guests rate, with the Greek night and BBQ night recurring favourites
  • Platanias village walkable for evenings off the resort

Disadvantages

  • Location scores 4.4 because the coast road splits the resort, with main-building guests crossing the footbridge to the beach
  • Value scores 4.4, with half-board drinks and extras pricing the recurring niggle
  • Some original-wing rooms feel dated next to the Imperial Wing
  • Room configurations vary, so families should confirm layouts before booking

The rooms: Imperial Wing first, main building second

Minoa Palace splits its keys between the original main building on the inland side and the Imperial Wing, the newer section nearer the sea, with some rooms carrying private pools and others mountain views at gentler rates.

The wing decision is the whole booking. The Imperial Wing buys newer interiors, quieter nights, and the short walk to the sand, and it is the version of the resort the warmest reviews describe. The main building trades those for lower rates and shorter walks to the main restaurant and piano bar; its best use is a mountain-view room for guests who treat the beach as an excursion rather than a residence.

The beach, the footbridge and the evenings

The beach side is the long, sandy Platanias strand, reached from the inland section over the resort’s aerial pedestrian bridge, the structure that has become Minoa Palace’s landmark. Sunbeds run plentiful by guest account, and the beach restaurant keeps lunch on the sand.

Evenings belong to the piano bar and the theme nights, with the Greek night and BBQ night the fixtures reviewers plan around, and Cretan wine flowing through the dinner mentions. Platanias itself takes over afterwards, one of the few five-star locations on Crete where stepping out for a bar crawl needs no taxi.

How to get there

Minoa Palace is roughly a 30-minute drive from Chania airport (CHQ), around the city and west along the coast to Platanias. Chania’s old town and harbour sit about 12 km east for the classic evening trip.

Three transport options cover the trip, and each fits a different stay. A pre-booked transfer or taxi is the easy arrival; our guide to taxi and airport transfer services in Crete lists the operators and typical prices. A hire car opens Chania, Falassarna, and Balos day trips, and our car rental in Crete page compares local rates. The frequent Platanias-Chania bus stops outside for cheap runs into town.

The Crete Locals review

Minoa Palace is the resort we suggest when someone wants western Crete’s beaches without giving up an actual town, because Platanias functions as the resort’s second wing: tavernas, pharmacies, bars, and buses all inside a stroll. Minoa Palace answers the strip’s noise with a genuinely calm interior, and the housekeeping culture, cleanliness at 4.8 across 2,006 reviews, is the quiet reason its guests return. This is a resort that wins on execution rather than spectacle.

The footbridge defines the stay more than any brochure admits. It photographs beautifully and solves the coast-road problem elegantly, and it also means main-building guests carry towels over it every beach day, which is exactly what the 4.4 location score is counting. The Imperial Wing exists to dissolve that trade-off, and the price gap between wings is the fairest upgrade on the property.

The other caveats stay small but consistent. Half board covers the meals generously while drinks and extras carry resort pricing, some original-wing rooms show their age beside the newer stock, and families occasionally find booked layouts differ from expectations, so confirming the exact configuration in writing is worth the email. None of this moves the resort off its perch as one of Platanias’s most reliable operators.

Book Minoa Palace with the wing decision made deliberately: Imperial Wing, sea side, for the beach-first stay; main building, mountain view, for the value play. May, June, and September give Platanias its pleasant version, the beach its space, and the footbridge its sunset walk, and the 30-minute transfer keeps the whole west of Crete in reach.
