Kefalas is a charming village located in Apokoronas, which is situated 30 kilometres east of Chania. The village was founded in the 11th century by Byzantine settlers who were sent to colonize Crete. The name Kefalas comes from the Kephalades, who were the leaders of the settlers. The village is perched on the slopes of the Drapanos peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the Bay of Georgioupolis, Lefka Ori (the White Mountain), and Rethymno (on a clear day). The village’s narrow streets are a mix of new homes, tastefully renovated ones, and partially ruined ones, which can only be navigated by medium-sized cars. In the centre of the village, there is a small square with a cafe, shops, and taverns.
Kefalas is known as the ‘village of churches’ due to an Ottoman rule that land could not be confiscated if a church was built on it. There are at least 8 publicly accessible churches in the village, and many more in private yards. On the outskirts of the village, there are several villas and holiday homes available for rent.
Although Kefalas does not have a beach, the closest one is Ombrosgialos Bay, a rocky cove with a concrete pier. Locals come here to sunbathe on the pier and take a dip in the crystal blue sea. It is worth noting that the village’s lack of a beach adds to its charm, as it is a peaceful and quiet place to relax and enjoy the stunning views.
