The 2 infinity pools are the hotel’s stage, stacked over the bay with the town curving away behind, and the rooftop bar above them owns the sunset hour. The seafront below carries a small bathing platform rather than a beach, with sandy Ammoudi a short walk along the shore.

InterContinental Crete is the hotel we recommend to travellers who find cove resorts beautiful for 2 days and confining by day 4, because it solves the problem the Elounda properties cannot: it puts five-star luxury inside a working town. From the lobby you walk to the marina, the lake, the tavernas, and the morning bakery queue, then come back to infinity pools and a serious spa. The 9.5 location score on Booking.com says guests price that freedom exactly as high as we do.
For a 2024 opening, the operation has found its footing fast. The Roussos restaurants give the east coast dining ambition it lacked outside the palace resorts, the massage programme is the most consistently praised single service we have seen in a first-year hotel’s reviews, and the converted Hermes site gives IHG a seafront position that can never be built again under current rules.
The caveats are the classic new-flagship pattern. Value at 4.2 reflects launch pricing that runs ahead of a still-settling operation, the sunbed economy around 2 relatively small pools breaks down by 7:30 on peak mornings, and the plunge-pool lottery, sun or shade, warm or cold, is real enough to plan around. The small beach is geography rather than failure; this is a town seafront, and Ammoudi covers the sand requirement 5 minutes away.
Book InterContinental Crete for the town-luxury combination, in June or September when the pools breathe and the rates ease, and put the plunge-pool question directly to the hotel before paying that category’s uplift.
