The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos Crete is a cultural hub that was founded in 1970 to accommodate the numerous new archaeological finds from eastern Crete. Previously, these finds were housed in the Museum of Heraklion.

The museum also features temporary exhibits throughout the year, showcasing works from contemporary artists or exploring other aspects of Cretan history and culture.

Among the most important exhibits of the museum are finds from the cemetery of Agia Fotia, which was located by the sea. These finds offer a glimpse into the lives of the ancient Minoans who inhabited the area, shedding light on their customs, beliefs, and daily routines.

The museum also features exhibits from the peak sanctuaries of the Middle Minoan I period (2000 B.C.), including the Gold diadem and the “Goddess of Myrtos”. These exhibits showcase the incredible artistry and craftsmanship of the ancient Minoans, as well as their religious practices and beliefs.

Other notable exhibits include the figurine of a worshiper or priestess from the cemetery of Myrsine in Sitia, the head of a clay statue, and the extraordinary Skull of a young athlete with a gold wreath found in the Roman cemetery of the city of Lato towards Kamara (modern Agios Nikolaos). These exhibits offer insights into the social structures and customs of the ancient civilizations that once inhabited the area.
