Crete hits 37.5°C as beaches fill on warm mid-September Sunday
Temperatures across Crete climbed to 36-37°C on Sunday, according to weather service meteo.gr, with conditions more typical of early summer than mid-September.
The highest reading was recorded in Paleochora, in the Chania regional unit, where the mercury reached 37.5°C, meteo.gr reported. It was followed by Plora in the Heraklion regional unit at 36.7°C, Souda at 36.4°C and Gortyna at 36.1°C. Temperatures also reached 36°C in Pyrgou, Heraklion, and in Vryses, Chania. The Potamon dam area in Rethymno recorded 35.9°C, while Nerokouros in Chania saw 35.8°C.
With clear skies and summer-level heat, many residents and visitors took the opportunity to swim, and the island’s beaches filled with people again, Cretalive reported.
Warm weather continues into September
The high temperatures come as forecasters have noted that temperatures across Greece are rising again before an autumn shift arrives next week, a pattern that has kept Crete’s beach season running well past the traditional summer months. Sea temperatures around the island also tend to stay warm into September, with NOAA data showing the sea is often warmer in September than in June.
