Sea around Crete is often warmer in September than in June, NOAA data shows

The air in Crete begins to cool as autumn approaches, but the sea often remains warmer in September than it was back in June. The reason lies not in perception but in the different way land and water store and release heat, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Land and sea do not warm at the same pace. Soil can heat up quickly during a sunny day and cool noticeably once the sun sets. Water, by contrast, needs far more energy to warm up, and far more time to lose the heat it has accumulated.

NOAA explains that water’s high heat capacity allows seas and oceans to store large amounts of heat and to respond more slowly to seasonal changes than land does.

Why June can feel colder in the water

By June, the sun is already strong and air temperatures in Crete can feel like a full summer. The sea, however, still retains some of the coolness left over from winter and spring.

It takes weeks of continuous sunshine to warm not just the surface but also the upper layer of water that is mixed by wind and waves. The difference becomes especially noticeable when winds pick up, as they stir the warmer surface water together with colder water from lower layers.

The thermocline — the layer where temperature drops sharply with depth — shifts throughout the year and is affected by seasonal heating.

Heat accumulated over an entire summer

By the time September arrives, the sea has absorbed solar energy for several months. Even once the air starts to cool, the water cannot immediately follow suit.

It continues to hold much of the heat it stored in July and August, releasing it gradually into the surrounding environment. Sea-temperature data for the Mediterranean, tracked through the Copernicus Marine service, reflects what island residents have long known from experience: the sea’s warmest period lags behind the peak of solar radiation.

Not every beach behaves the same way

The pattern does not apply uniformly every year or along every coastline. Depth, currents, the shape of a bay and strong winds can all create noticeable local differences.

A shallow, sheltered bay generally warms more easily than an open, deep stretch of coast. Likewise, a spell of strong wind can noticeably alter surface water temperature within a few days. For that reason, the accurate statement is that Crete’s sea is often warmer in September than in June, rather than that this happens without exception — a nuance worth keeping in mind when planning seaside experiences later in the year.

The swimming season ends later than the calendar suggests

Water’s strong thermal inertia explains why swimming off Crete can remain pleasant well after August ends. The atmosphere already shows the first signs of autumn, but as the region’s September weather outlook notes, the sea needs more time to change season.
