BOAK to close for four days between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos from September 17
The section of the BOAK highway under reconstruction between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos will close to traffic from 6am on Thursday, September 17, until 6am on Monday, September 21, due to ongoing works, according to the company carrying out the project.
Crews will work around the clock throughout the four-day closure, the company said in a statement.
Traffic arrangements during the closure
Cars, buses and all vehicles under 12 tons will continue to use the old national road (PEO) as usual, travelling in the direction from Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion, and via the PEO, Lakonia and the Kritsa junction in the direction from Neapoli to Agios Nikolaos. Passengers relying on scheduled coach services should note that KTEL Heraklion-Lasithi has previously warned of delays linked to the ongoing works on this stretch.
Vehicles over 12 tons will be diverted onto the peripheral road via Heraklion, Arkalochori, Viannos, Ierapetra and Pachia Ammos before reaching Agios Nikolaos, the company said. Informational signage will be placed at key points along the route, according to the announcement.
The closure is the latest in a series of scheduled interruptions on the BOAK as reconstruction continues; an earlier stage saw the road close daily near the Xiropotamos bridge from September 7 to 12, while separate works have also produced long traffic queues near Karteros. Drivers planning to travel through the affected area, including those using a rental car in Crete, are advised to plan for the detour and allow extra time.
