OFYPEKA urges caution at Samaria Gorge as unstable weather forecast looms for Tuesday
The Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) has asked visitors crossing the Samaria Gorge tomorrow, Tuesday, September 15, 2026, to be especially careful and to take necessary personal protection measures, citing a forecast of unstable weather conditions from the National Meteorological Service (EMY).
According to OFYPEKA’s announcement, EMY’s forecast for Tuesday points to fluctuating weather in the area, prompting the advisory while the crossing remains open to visitors.
The gorge is one of the most visited among Crete’s gorges, drawing large numbers of hikers during the crossing season, which typically continues into the autumn depending on conditions.
OFYPEKA said that if EMY issues an updated forecast indicating a further deterioration in the weather, a new announcement will be released tomorrow at 6:30 am. The advisory follows a broader pattern of shifting autumn conditions across the island, after forecasters recently noted that northerly winds are expected to reach 8 Beaufort off Crete as autumn weather sets in.
