Paranymfi is a mountain village in the Asterousia range of the Heraklion region, about 41 km south of Heraklion city. The village stands above the Libyan Sea rather than on it, and half a kilometre past the last houses the road opens onto a view of the sea and of Tris Ekklisies from the Ambas Gorge. Springs at Paranymfi feed the Mousoulis stream, which gathers water here and on the Amygdalos plateau at roughly 700 m and carries it down to Tris Ekklisies beach. The ancient monastery of Saint Paul sits in the village, and 14th-century frescoes cover its walls.
Heraklion airport lies about 41 km north, so Paranymfi is a long drive from the arrivals hall rather than a first-night stop. The village works as the road head for the Tris Ekklisies coast: five beaches, four gorges, a winery and two monasteries all sit within 8 km, and most of them are reached from here.
Things to do in Paranymfi
Six outings start in or near the village, listed below from nearest to furthest.
- See the frescoes at the monastery of Saint Paul. The ancient monastery stands in Paranymfi itself, and its frescoes date from the 14th century.
- Look down on the Libyan Sea from the Ambas Gorge. The viewpoint over the sea and over Tris Ekklisies opens half a kilometre past the village, and 1.5 km away the Mousoulis stream meets the rocky Asterousia fault and falls 145 m. Only the Mastoras waterfall in the Ha gorge at 215 m and the Perdika waterfall in Samaria at 240 m drop further in Greece, which makes the Ambas waterfall the third highest free-falling one in the country.
- Drive down to Tris Ekklisies. The winding asphalt road to the coast begins in Paranymfi and runs 10 km to Tris Ekklisies, with sea views for much of the descent.
- Taste wine at the village winery. The Kainourgiakis family winery lies 4.3 km from Paranymfi.
- Walk up to the Kofinas peak sanctuary. Kofinas is the highest summit of the Asterousia Mountains, and the sanctuary on it sits 4.7 km from the village.
- Visit Koudoumas monastery. The monastery stands 5.5 km away on the western edge of Cape Martelos, below Kofinas Peak, in a district whose rock cavities once sheltered hermits. Its own access road is a 20 km dirt track from Sternes village that drops from 1,000 m to sea level between pine and cypress trees.
Beaches in and around Paranymfi
Paranymfi has no beach of its own, and 5 lie within 6 km on the Libyan Sea below the village. The coast here is the wild southern edge of the Asterousia Mountains, where bare rock, steep cliffs and gorge mouths separate one beach from the next, so several are easier to reach by boat than by road.
- Tris Ekklisies lies at the end of the 10 km road down from the village, a remote coastal settlement 64 km south of Heraklion whose name means Three Churches.
- Glykys Kolimbos sits 2.9 km away, the most westerly beach of the Tris Ekklisies area, named sweet-water beach after the freshwater springs that rise underwater. Three linked caves open at its eastern end, the largest of them 20 m high, and a stone bridge forms at the far tip.
- Voidomatis is 3.3 km away and 2.5 km east of Tris Ekklisies, sandy and clear-watered at the exit of the Mesosfini gorge. The name means ox’s eye, after the sea cave at the eastern end, and two large rocks stand offshore. The old dirt road from Tris Ekklisies reaches it.
- Kaminaki stands 4.9 km away, a secluded pebble beach at the mouth of the Perivoliano gorge that suits fishing. Most people arrive by sea, because the gorge is hard to descend; the nearest harbour is 3 km west at Tris Ekklisies.
- Koudoumas comes last at 5.6 km away, a pebble beach with clear, cool water directly in front of Koudoumas monastery.
Gorges do the work of roads on this coast. The Mesosfini canyon starts at 450 m near Mournia village and exits at Voidomatis beach, and it is technical: waterfalls, long vertical drops and jammed boulders mean Mesosfini needs canyoning gear and training rather than walking boots. Two more cut the same range nearby, Koudoumas Gorge at 5.1 km and Goula Gorge at 7.5 km.
Where to eat in Paranymfi
Eating options around Paranymfi are few and spread across the neighbouring villages. The nearest one we list is a café 4.4 km from the village, so a day spent on the beaches below is easier with food carried down.
- Café Charakas sits 4.4 km from Paranymfi.
Getting to Paranymfi
Paranymfi sits 40.7 km from Heraklion, 45.1 km from Hersonissos and 55.4 km from Ierapetra, which makes Heraklion the practical approach for most visitors. Heraklion airport is about 41 km north. The village is the last settlement on the asphalt before the coast, and the road continues past it for 10 km down to Tris Ekklisies.
A car is needed here. The beaches, the winery, the peak sanctuary and Koudoumas monastery all sit 3 km to 6 km out on mountain roads, and the dirt track to the monastery loses 1,000 m of height over 20 km from Sternes village.
