Location
Victoria Hotel is located at Akti Stylianou Koundourou 34, in Agios Nikolaos. The map below shows the exact spot; Google Maps and Waze give turn-by-turn directions.
Who Victoria suits, and who should skip it
Victoria suits couples and solo travellers who want a clean sea-view room on the water at Agios Nikolaos, a 10-minute walk from Lake Voulismeni, at about 51 euro a night. It suits guests who want hosts rather than a front desk. Anyone who needs a pool, a sandy beach at the door or reliable wifi should book one of the resorts north of town.
Advantages
- Location scored 9.9 and staff 9.9 by Booking.com guests, the highest in this batch
- 9.4 on Booking.com across 296 reviews, with value for money at 9.7
- 143 of 207 Tripadvisor reviews rate the stay Excellent, and 15th of 82 in town
- Sea-view rooms with balconies over the bay, recommended by nearly every guest
- The beach and the promenade directly in front of the hotel
- Free street parking that guests describe as plentiful, plus a supermarket and bakery nearby
Disadvantages
- The beach in front is rocky rather than sandy
- Wifi scored 7.5, the weakest of its Booking.com sub-scores
- Facilities scored 8.9: there is no pool and no restaurant
- Rooms are average in size and simply furnished
- The street sits below the town, which is built up a hill
- Only 15 rooms, so the sea-view categories go early
The rooms: 15 keys, and the sea-view question
Victoria sells seven categories: Economy Single, Single, Budget Twin, Economy Double, Economy Double or Twin, Double with Sea View, and Double or Twin with Sea View. Guests are unanimous on one point, which is to book a sea view, and one puts it as a direct instruction: when you book a room, ask for the sea view.
Expect a simple room kept immaculately. Reviewers describe average size, a refrigerator, a kettle for coffee on the balcony, air conditioning and daily cleaning they call thorough, with cleanliness scored 9.6 on Booking.com. One guest notes the television and adds that they did not come on holiday to watch it.
The hosts, and what 9.9 for location means
Two names run through this record: Victoria and Stavros. Guests describe hospitality as the hotel’s first priority, hosts who sort parking, arrange excursions and point out the travel agency one door along, and a welcome that sets the tone of the stay. In a 15-room hotel that is the whole operation rather than a department.
The location score of 9.9 is not marketing. The hotel stands on the Akti Koundourou promenade with the water across the pavement, a 10-minute walk from Lake Voulismeni and the town centre, and restaurants in both directions. A guest describes the beach as being really in front of the door, and another as a stone’s throw from the sea-facing promenade, with the caveat that it is rocky rather than sand.
Agios Nikolaos rewards this kind of base. The town is the most walkable in eastern Crete, the boats to Spinalonga leave from Plaka and Elounda a few kilometres north, the Lasithi plateau climbs inland in about an hour, and Vai and the eastern beaches are a morning’s drive. Paying 51 euro for a sea-view balcony in the middle of it is the reason value scores 9.7.
How to get there
Fly into Heraklion airport (HER), about 65 km west, roughly an hour by road along the national road. Sitia airport (JSH) is closer but carries far fewer flights.
Pre-book a transfer from Heraklion if you are not driving; the operators and fares are in our guide to taxi and transfer services in Crete. Hire a car for Spinalonga, the Lasithi plateau and the eastern beaches, use the free street parking the hotel helps with, and check the terms in our car hire guide for Crete. Everything in Agios Nikolaos is walkable from the promenade.
The Crete Locals review
Victoria earns 8.8 from us. A 9.4 across 296 Booking.com reviews with location at 9.9, staff at 9.9, value at 9.7 and cleanliness at 9.6 is an unusually clean set of sub-scores, and Tripadvisor agrees at 4.6 across 207 reviews with 143 at Excellent.
What you are buying is position and hospitality at a price that looks like a mistake. A sea-view balcony on the promenade of the most walkable town in eastern Crete, kept spotless, with hosts who solve problems, for around 51 euro a night, is the strongest value in this batch and possibly on this site.
The limits are exactly what you would expect at that rate. Facilities score 8.9 because there are none to speak of: no pool, no restaurant, no spa. The beach in front is rocky. Wifi at 7.5 is the weakest sub-score. The rooms are simple. None of that is hidden, and the guests who rate it 9.4 knew it before they arrived.
Book Victoria for a couple’s or solo stay in Agios Nikolaos with a sea-view room and the promenade at the door. Book a resort north of town if you want a pool and a sandy beach.
