Agios Nikolaos, and the parking question
Agios Nikolaos is the most walkable town in eastern Crete, built around Lake Voulismeni and its port, with restaurants and bars on both. Staying above the port puts all of that under the window and removes the taxi bills that shape a stay in Elounda, 11 km north.
Parking is the practical detail guests raise. The port car park is free and a few minutes walk from the hotel, which in a town centre is worth real money over a week. Take a hire car if you plan to reach Spinalonga, Vai or the Lasithi plateau, because those are the trips that justify one.
Agios Nikolaos also works as a base in a way the resort villages do not. Spinalonga sails from Plaka and Elounda a few kilometres north, the Lasithi plateau climbs inland in about an hour, and Vai and the eastern beaches are a morning’s drive, so a week here can be spent on day trips with the town waiting at the end of each one. Hotels of this size in the resort villages usually leave you driving back to somewhere that closes at ten.
How to get there
Fly into Heraklion airport (HER), about 65 km west, roughly an hour by road along the national road. Sitia airport (JSH) is closer but carries far fewer flights.

For couples touring eastern Crete, that is a better base than a resort outside town.
The limitation is the size, in both senses. Fifteen rooms means booking early and accepting there is no pool, no beach and no spa. It also means the floor you are allocated decides your week, so make the request explicit at booking rather than hoping on arrival.
Book Port 7 for a couple’s stay in Agios Nikolaos with a high floor and a port view, and use the free parking. Book in Elounda if you want a resort with a beach, and expect to pay several times as much for the water view.
