Beach description

Situated just 1km south of the famous Agios Nikolaos lake, Gargadoros is a picturesque suburb of the city that’s well worth a visit. Here, two local favourite beaches are nestled, both popular for their serene waters and the nearby restaurants and bars.

As you arrive, you’ll first encounter the main beach of Gargadoros right next to a tavern. This pebbly beach is well-maintained and a perfect getaway for those residing in Agios Nikolaos who wish for a break from the usual. Head north towards the small pier from the main beach, and you’ll discover a hidden sandy beach on the other side. Accessible only via a wooden ladder, this hidden spot is perfect for those seeking a tranquil retreat.

The origin of the name ‘Gargadoros’ has two possible explanations. The widely accepted version is that it derives from the Greek words “gargaro idor” meaning clear water, which likely refers to a small, now-dried-up river in the area. The second interpretation, while less likely, is quite intriguing: it suggests the name comes from “gorga dora,” or “quick gifts,” referring to the abundant fish that were easily caught in the small harbor, thereby being a swift gift for local fishermen.
