Join us for an unforgettable experience as we camp under the full moon in the white mountain range of Crete and then summit to Western Crete’s highest peak at 2,453m high for a magical sunrise
Itinerary
We will meet in the mountain village of Anopoli in Sfakia, approx 1 1/2 hours drive from Chania, in the South of Crete. The adventure begins from here, where we get into open trucks and drive an hour up into the mountains with amazing views of the Cretan Sea, noticing how the landscape changes, the higher we get
Once in the foothills of the white mountains we will set up camp. All camping equipment is provided including tent, sleeping bag and liner, mat, pillow and headlamp
Once set up we will make a fire and enjoy delicious food prepared from the village taverna, sharing stories, getting to know each and other and enjoying the magic of the full moon
We will wake up a couple of hours before sunrise and start our hike to the peak of Pachnes in the dark and enjoy the slow feeling of warmth as the sun starts to rise from behind the mountains and warm our souls. We will reach the peak for sunrise and enjoy a breakfast of fresh bread and locally prepared jam and honey before making our descent to break up camp and drive back down to the village
What you need to know
Camp is at approximately 2,000m and when the sun goes down, it gets COLD up in the mountains and especially at the peak where it is known to be windy. Please bring layers, gloves, hat, coat, long trousers and sleeves to maximise your enjoyment from this trip
If you have a fear of heights, there are a couple of sections that you might find difficult, on the whole this is probably one of the smoothest trails in Crete. In total approximately 8km with 600m of elevation gain and will take 1 1/2 hours depending on stops and pace to ascend and quicker on the descent. We will relax on the top depending on the weather conditions. In total approximately 3-4 hours time on the trail
You have the option to cycle to the camping site and back to the village on e-mountain bikes at an extra cost. This will take approximately 2 hours

Θα συναντηθούμε στο ορεινό χωριό Ανώπολη στα Σφακιά, περίπου 1 1/2 ώρα οδικώς από τα Χανιά, στη Νότια Κρήτη. Η περιπέτεια ξεκινά από εδώ, όπου μπαίνουμε σε ανοιχτά φορτηγά και οδηγούμε μια ώρα στα βουνά με εκπληκτική θέα στο Κρητικό Πέλαγος, παρατηρώντας πώς αλλάζει το τοπίο, όσο ψηλότερα ανεβαίνουμε
Μόλις στους πρόποδες των Λέυκα Όρη θα στήσουμε στρατόπεδο. Παρέχεται όλος ο εξοπλισμός κάμπινγκ, όπως σκηνή, υπνόσακος και επένδυση, χαλάκι, μαξιλάρι και προβολέας
Μόλις στήσουμε θα βάλουμε φωτιά και θα απολαύσουμε νόστιμο φαγητό από την ταβέρνα του χωριού, μοιραζόμενοι ιστορίες, γνωριμίες και απολαμβάνοντας τη μαγεία της πανσελήνου
Θα ξυπνήσουμε μια-δυο ώρες πριν την ανατολή του ηλίου και θα ξεκινήσουμε την πεζοπορία μας στην κορυφή των Παχνών στο σκοτάδι και θα απολαύσουμε την αργή αίσθηση της ζεστασιάς καθώς ο ήλιος αρχίζει να ανατέλλει πίσω από τα βουνά και ζεσταίνει τις ψυχές μας. Θα φτάσουμε στην κορυφή για την ανατολή του ηλίου και θα απολαύσουμε ένα πρωινό με φρέσκο ψωμί και τοπικά παρασκευασμένη μαρμελάδα και μέλι πριν κάνουμε την κάθοδό μας για να διαλύσουμε την κατασκήνωση και να οδηγήσουμε πίσω στο χωριό
Τι πρέπει να ξέρετε
Η κατασκήνωση είναι περίπου στα 2.000 μέτρα και όταν ο ήλιος δύει, κρυώνει στα βουνά και ειδικά στην κορυφή όπου είναι γνωστό ότι φυσάει. Παρακαλούμε φέρτε στρώσεις, γάντια, καπέλο, παλτό, μακρύ παντελόνι και μανίκια για να μεγιστοποιήσετε την απόλαυσή σας από αυτό το ταξίδι
Αν φοβάστε τα ύψη, υπάρχουν μερικά τμήματα που μπορεί να σας φανούν δύσκολα, συνολικά αυτό είναι ίσως ένα από τα πιο ομαλά μονοπάτια στην Κρήτη. Συνολικά περίπου 8 χλμ με 600 μέτρα υψομετρική απολαβή και θα χρειαστούν 1 1/2 ώρα ανάλογα με τις στάσεις και το ρυθμό για να ανέβει και πιο γρήγορα στην κατάβαση. Θα χαλαρώσουμε στην κορυφή ανάλογα με τις καιρικές συνθήκες. Συνολικά περίπου 3-4 ώρες στο μονοπάτι
Έχετε την επιλογή να μεταβείτε με ποδήλατο στο κάμπινγκ και να επιστρέψετε στο χωριό με e-mountain ποδήλατα με επιπλέον κόστος. Αυτό θα διαρκέσει περίπου 2 ώρες

Matala Beach Festival celebrates music, freedom, and the spirit of community. In June 2011 the Festos Municipality threw a festival on the beach to celebrate the launch of the ‘Myth of Matala’ book featuring photos of the hippie cave residents during the 60s & 70s. It was a hippie reunion. 35,000 people heard about it and flocked to Matala beach.
In June 2012 over 58,000 people visited the festival weekend and the word is quickly spreading. It was a huge success as free events which brought together music and arts fans from all generations together on the beach beneath the caves to celebrate peace, love and happiness.
Matala Beach Festival 2013 introduced to 70.000 people the meaning of LIFE! In June 2013, they have invited Harry Keyworth to be the first solo artist to drive the Road To Matala Tour along the original ‘hippie trail’ of the 1960s and 1970s.

During the Matala Beach Festival, there are several accommodation options available in and around Matala. You can camp for free at Matala campsite. It offers basic services on a large 40,000 m2 area next to Matala beach. It’s a low-cost option with showers, toilets, and hot water, allowing visitors to experience the “Myth of Matalas” like in hippie times in the 60s and 70s. It’s important to note that the campsite offers basic services and may have limited capacity, so it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a spot.
