Forecast models track possible Mediterranean cyclone that could track toward Crete

Greek weather forecasts point to a shift toward more autumn-like conditions from Monday, September 14, with falling temperatures, while forecasters are separately monitoring a low-pressure system expected to form in the southwest Ionian Sea. Some forecast scenarios suggest the system could develop into what meteorologists call a “Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone” and track toward Crete and the Dodecanese, though the outlook remains uncertain.

Cooler, more autumnal Monday

On Monday, temperatures are expected to drop further, with the change more noticeable in the morning and evening hours. Most areas will see little to moderate cloud cover, with light, brief local showers possible in eastern and southern regions. Isolated showers may also appear in the eastern mainland, from Thessaly and the Sporades to Evia, Boeotia, Attica and parts of the eastern and northeastern Peloponnese, mainly near mountainous areas, though these are expected to be limited and short-lived.

Cloud cover is forecast to increase during the day, more so toward the west, southwest and later the south. Saharan dust will continue to affect southern Greece in relatively elevated concentrations, and visibility may be locally reduced in the evening, mainly on the mainland.

Highs of 28-30°C in Crete

Maximum temperatures in northern Greece are expected to be around 25-29°C, while central, western and southern mainland areas could reach 29-31°C in places. In Crete and the rest of the Aegean islands, temperatures are forecast to range from about 17°C to 28-30°C, a pattern the source describes as more typical of September.

Winds in the Aegean will remain northerly at 4-5 Beaufort, strengthening to 5-6 Beaufort from the northwest around the Dodecanese. In the Ionian Sea, northwesterly winds of 3-4 Beaufort, locally reaching 5, are expected.

Attention turns to a low over the Ionian

Forecast interest shifts more significantly from Tuesday, September 15, as available data point to the possible formation of a low-pressure system over the southwest Ionian Sea. Its exact intensity and, in particular, its future path remain unclear. According to recent ECMWF model trends, cooling patterns for Crete have differed from those on the mainland, adding to the uncertainty around how the system might evolve.

Some forecast scenarios examine the possibility that the low could intensify significantly and take on characteristics described in international meteorological terminology as a “Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone” — a Mediterranean cyclonic system with some features resembling a tropical storm. These systems are more commonly known as medicanes, a term combining “Mediterranean” and “hurricane,” and under specific atmospheric and sea conditions can organize strong cyclonic circulation accompanied by powerful winds and heavy rainfall.

Crete among the possible paths

In part of the available forecast data, the developing low appears to move toward the southwest Ionian Sea and southwest Peloponnese before shifting east toward Crete and the Dodecanese. This outcome cannot yet be considered certain: at this range, even relatively small changes in the position and intensity of atmospheric systems can significantly alter both the path and the characteristics of the low.

Forecasters say the next 24 hours and updated model runs are expected to give a clearer picture of whether strong cyclogenesis will actually occur, whether the system will take on medicane characteristics, and whether Crete will ultimately lie in its path. The development follows a broader pattern in which temperatures across Greece rose again before the anticipated autumn shift.
