Since 2021, I’ve been living with my partner, our chickens, and a handful of cats in a small village in western Crete. Our dream began in 2015 during our first holiday on the island. From that moment, we knew: One day, we’ll move here.
After several more visits and a trip around the world, “someday” became “now” in the summer of 2021.
Our journey began with a simple click. While browsing Facebook Marketplace, we stumbled upon a house that immediately sparked our interest. During our next holiday, we arranged a viewing, and as soon as we stepped inside, it was clear—we had found our future home! In the summer of 2021, we signed the rental agreement, packed our lives into boxes, and made the big move.
Crete in the winter is very different from the lively summer months—it’s quieter, colder, and can be quite rainy. Before committing to buying a property, consider renting first to experience the island’s year-round lifestyle.

Our first months on the island were not all sunshine and blue skies. Winter brought unexpected challenges—heavy rain, water damage, and even power outages. It was frustrating at times, but patience and adaptability helped us push through. Over time, we settled in, made local connections, and turned our house into a true home.
