Tholos is a small coastal settlement on the north coast of eastern Crete, in the Lasithi region, about 26 km east of Agios Nikolaos and 4 km north of Kavousi village. Tholos sits at the end of a fertile valley framed by old olive groves and vineyards, and the beach below it is also known as Kavousi beach. Tourism has touched this stretch only lightly, which is the main reason people come.

Behind the settlement the Thripti range rises steeply, and three gorges drop from it into the Kavousi plain within a few kilometres. The Minoan sites of Gournia and Azorias lie close by, so a stay here mixes quiet swimming with archaeology and hard walking rather than resort life.

Walk the Havgas gorge. The canyon by Kavousi, 800 m from the village, is the lower section of the wild Mesonas gorge that comes down off the Thripti plateau. Havgas is a common name for canyons in eastern Crete, along with variants such as Ha and Havgoudi.
Visit the Chrysokamino copper workshop. The prehistoric smelting site stands 2.2 km from Kavousi.
Reach Agriomandra beach on foot. The cove hides at the mouth of the Agriomandra gorge 3 km west, and the only way in is through the canyon itself. Take the dirt road across the meadows west of Kavousi, known as Lakos Ambeli, to reach the gorge entrance.

Getting to Tholos
