Archanes is a restored, wine-producing town that sits about 15 kilometres (9 miles) south of Heraklion, at the foot of Mount Giouhtas. Archanes spreads across a basin of vineyards and olive groves and stays one of the most accessible rural destinations in central Crete, with Heraklion airport roughly 14 kilometres away. The town holds around 5,000 residents and divides into Epano (upper) Archanes and Kato Archanes, which sits about 1 kilometre to the north.
History and Minoan Archanes
Archanes has been an important settlement since Minoan times, when it ranked among the hubs around Knossos. Archaeologists uncovered a Minoan palatial complex at Tourkoyeitonia in the centre of the town, dated to roughly 1900 to 1450 BC, and the Minoan necropolis at Fourni lies on the edge of the settlement. Mount Giouhtas rises to 811 metres just west of the town and carries a Minoan peak sanctuary built around 2100 BC, and Cretan myth names the mountain as the burial place of Zeus. The nearby Minoan villa of Vathypetro preserves one of the oldest known wine presses, a sign that Archanes has pressed grapes for thousands of years.
Wine, olive oil, and the old town
Archanes ranks among Crete’s most important wine areas, and its wineries welcome visitors for tastings of indigenous grapes such as Kotsifali and Mandilari. Archanes also produces high-quality olive oil from the surrounding groves, alongside table grapes and raisins. The old town keeps rows of restored 19th-century neoclassical mansions along pedestrianised, cobbled lanes, and the European Union has recognised the settlement as a model village for the way it preserved this historic core. The Archaeological Collection and the Folklore Museum display finds and everyday objects that trace the town’s long story.
Getting to Archanes
Reach Archanes by road south from Heraklion, a drive of about 15 kilometres that passes close to the Palace of Knossos, less than 10 kilometres away. Buses run from Heraklion, though a car reaches the wineries, Mount Giouhtas, and Vathypetro far more easily.
