Seaside A Lifestyle Resort – Adults Only

Seaside A Lifestyle Resort is a 218-room adults-only resort above Mononaftis bay at Agia Pelagia, and it has the widest split between its two review platforms of any hotel in this batch. Seaside scores 9.4 on Booking.com across 922 reviews and 4.3 on Tripadvisor across 3,533, and with a Tripadvisor sample that large the lower figure has to be taken seriously rather than explained away. The five restaurants, the private-pool suites and the bay itself are the case for booking, and the scale of the place is the case against.

Location
Seaside A Lifestyle Resort – Adults Only is located at Agia Pelagia, in Agia Pelagia Village. The map below shows the exact spot; Google Maps and Waze give turn-by-turn directions.
Who Seaside suits, and who should skip it
Seaside suits couples who want an adults-only week with several restaurants to choose between and a suite with its own pool. It suits guests who value a sheltered bay over a long open beach, since Mononaftis is small and calm. Travellers who dislike large resorts, or who want to walk to a town in the evening, should look at the smaller adults-only hotels further east.
Advantages
- Five restaurants, including UMI for Japanese and Peruvian dishes and a Cretan taverna
- Suites with private pools, including the On the Rocks suite with a private infinity pool
- Adults-only across the whole resort, so quiet is the default
- Position above Mononaftis bay, sheltered and calm rather than open sea
- A 300 sqm open-air yoga shala built from bamboo, plus a fitness studio
- Room categories from 22 sqm doubles to 40 sqm two-bedroom and loft suites
Disadvantages
- Tripadvisor sits at 4.3 across 3,533 reviews, the weakest large sample in this batch
- 218 rooms on a hillside means walking, steps and distance to the water
- Entry rooms start at 22 sqm, which is tight for a long stay
- Agia Pelagia village is a walk or a short drive, not a step away
- Mononaftis bay is small, so it fills when the resort is full
- A la carte restaurants usually need booking early in the week
The rooms: 218 keys from 22 sqm to 44 sqm
Seaside publishes its room sizes, which makes the ladder easy to read: doubles at 22 to 26 sqm, junior suites at 30 sqm for up to 3 guests, loft suites over two floors at 40 to 44 sqm, two-bedroom suites at 40 sqm with a private pool, and the On the Rocks suite at 26 to 30 sqm with a private infinity pool. Sea view is a separate charge on most categories.
Pay for a private pool if the budget allows, because on a hillside resort of this size a pool at your door removes the walk to the main pool twice a day. Ask which level your room sits on. The site climbs away from the bay, and the difference between a room near the water and one near the top is a real part of the daily experience.
Five restaurants, a bamboo yoga shala and Mononaftis bay
The dining line-up is the resort’s strongest card. Veranda is the main restaurant, looking over Mononaftis bay, with a broad Cretan selection. Minoan Cretan Taverna does the traditional version, UMI merges Japanese and Peruvian cooking, Oceano is the newest room with wide sea views, and the pool and Panorama bars handle the rest of the day. Five kitchens across one resort is unusual outside the largest properties, and it is the main answer to a week without leaving the gate.
The wellness side is more distinctive than most spa lists. Asana is a 300 sqm open-air yoga shala built from bamboo, designed to sit in the landscape rather than in a basement, and there is a fitness studio alongside. Down at the water, Mononaftis is a small sheltered bay rather than a long beach, which makes for calm swimming and a crowded shoreline in high season.
How to get there
Fly into Heraklion airport (HER), about 25 km east, which is one of the shorter transfers on the north coast. Agia Pelagia lies just off the national road, so the drive is straightforward in either direction.
Pre-book a transfer if you are arriving at night, since the descent into Agia Pelagia is a series of bends; the operators and typical fares are in our guide to taxi and transfer services in Crete. Hire a car if you plan to see Knossos, Rethymno or the Fodele valley, and check the terms first in our car hire guide for Crete. The village and its tavernas are a walk downhill and a climb back, so many guests take a taxi one way.
The Crete Locals review
Seaside earns 8.4 from us. Two numbers explain the score: 9.4 from 922 Booking.com guests, and 4.3 from 3,533 on Tripadvisor. When a sample gets past three thousand, the average stops being an accident, so we treat the Tripadvisor figure as the long-run view of a resort that recent guests rate much higher. The likeliest reading is that the property has improved, and that the newer dining rooms and suite categories are pulling recent ratings up while the older record holds the average down.
What is not in dispute is the dining. Five restaurants, one of them merging Japanese and Peruvian cooking and another doing straight Cretan food, is a genuine reason to stay put for a week, and guests who mention food mention choice rather than repetition, which is the opposite of the complaint we see at most all-inclusive resorts of this size. The bamboo yoga shala is also a real facility rather than a marketing line, at 300 sqm and open to the air.
The structural issue is scale on a slope. 218 rooms stacked above a small bay means the resort is spread out, that some rooms are a long way from the water, and that Mononaftis gets busy in August in a way a longer beach would not. Guests who booked a private-pool suite mostly stop caring; guests in a 22 sqm entry room at the top of the site notice every day. That is a booking decision more than a hotel failing, and it is worth spending money on.
Book Seaside for an adults-only week where dinner changes every night and the swimming is calm, and book a suite with a pool if you can. Look at a smaller adults-only property if 200-plus rooms and a hillside walk sound like work, and read the recent reviews rather than the Tripadvisor average, which describes a longer history than the one you will experience.
