Kalypso Suites Hotel (Adults Only)

Kalypso Suites Hotel is an adults-only boutique of just 9 suites on Akti Vritomartidos, the waterfront street at the centre of Elounda village, overlooking the port. Each suite is individually designed and named for Greek mythology, and guests score the hotel 9.7 out of 10 on Booking.com across 213 reviews, with a 5.0 Tripadvisor average on a small 31-review sample. Our verdict lands at 8.6 out of 10: the anti-resort Elounda stay done beautifully, with the bare-by-design facilities the honest trade.

Who Kalypso suits, and who should skip it

Kalypso suits couples who want Elounda’s water and light with a village life attached, and it suits them because the front door opens onto the harbour promenade: 53 restaurants within half a kilometre, Skisma’s sandy town beach 300 metres along, and the Spinalonga boats at the quay. The lists below come from recurring themes in its Booking.com and Tripadvisor reviews.

Advantages

  • Location scored 9.8 on Booking.com, the best number we have recorded on the east coast
  • Design with a signature, each suite dressed by Cretan designers in natural rope and wood
  • Breakfast served in the room, on your balcony over the port
  • Kitchens in most suites for the long-stay rhythm
  • Village at the door, with tavernas, beaches, and boats replacing resort facilities
  • Rates at a fraction of the bay’s resort prices

Disadvantages

  • No pool, no bar, no restaurant, by design, so resort expectations have nowhere to land
  • Bathrooms run small, with walk-in showers that flood the floor in at least one suite
  • Only 9 keys, so dates sell out and the Tripadvisor sample stays tiny
  • Village-front rooms carry village-front evening sounds in season

The suites: 9 myths, choose your square metres

Kalypso runs 9 suites from 20 to 55 square metres, each with its own name and design: Estia, Hermes, Kyveli, Labyrinth, Afroditi, Athena, and Vision among them, most with equipped kitchens and balconies to the port.

Choose by size and light: Athena leads the top end, the junior suites suit shorter stays, and every unit shares the same designer hand. Ask about the bathroom layout when booking if step-in showers matter to you, the one recurring practical note in an otherwise adoring file.

The waterfront, the beaches and the breakfast

The waterfront is the hotel’s whole facility list, and it is enough: the port’s promenade below the balcony, Skisma beach a 4-minute walk, and Elounda’s square with its boats and cafes at the door.

Breakfast arrives at the room on your schedule, the small ritual guests mention most, and dinner is the village’s job, from harbourside fish tavernas to the bakery queue. Spinalonga leaves from the quay, Plaka is 10 minutes up the coast, and the palace resorts’ spas sell day treatments when the mood strikes.

How to get there

Kalypso sits at Akti Vritomartidos 3 in central Elounda, about 58 km from Heraklion airport (HER), roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes by road via Agios Nikolaos.

Three transport options cover the trip, and each fits a different stay. A pre-booked transfer or taxi is the simple arrival; our guide to taxi and airport transfer services in Crete lists the operators and typical prices. A hire car adds the east coast, though the village itself needs none, and our car rental in Crete page compares local rates. The Elounda bus from Agios Nikolaos stops a short walk away.

The Crete Locals review

Kalypso is the Elounda stay we recommend to people who love the bay but roll their eyes at the gates, because it inverts the local formula completely: instead of buying isolation and building facilities to compensate, it buys the village and lets Elounda be the resort. The 9.8 location score is the thesis graded, and the 45-year-old family building reborn around 2021 gives the design real walls to hang on.

The design is the second argument. Nine suites each done once, rope and timber by Cretan hands, myth names that could be twee and instead read affectionate: it photographs like a magazine feature and costs like a good village hotel, and the breakfast-on-the-balcony ritual over the port is worth more than most buffets.

Honesty about the format and the numbers: there is no pool for the heatwave afternoon, no house restaurant for the tired night, and the small-bathroom grumble is real in at least one suite; and while Booking’s 213 reviews at 9.7 is a solid base, Tripadvisor’s perfect 5.0 rests on just 31, so we score on the former. Guests booking a resort by mistake write the only unhappy sentences this place generates.

Book Kalypso for the village-life version of Elounda: a bigger suite for a week, the balcony breakfast standing, Skisma before the boats wake, and the bay’s palaces visited for a spa day rather than lived in. May, June, September, and October are its best light, and 9 keys means booking early is the whole strategy.
