Heraklion airport serves 181,000 passengers over three-day period, Cretalive reports

Heraklion’s “Nikos Kazantzakis” airport handled 1,088 flights and a total of 181,145 passengers over a three-day period from Friday, August 7, to Sunday, August 9, according to information obtained by Cretalive.

The figures illustrate the heavy pressure on the airport during this period of the summer season.

Nearly 90,000 arrivals

Arrivals were particularly high over the three days. Domestic flights brought 9,732 passengers to Heraklion, while international flights accounted for 80,180 arriving passengers.

In total, 89,912 passengers arrived at the airport during the three-day period, with the large majority coming from international flights.

Counting both arrivals and departures, Nikos Kazantzakis airport handled 181,145 passengers between August 7 and 9. This works out to an average of more than 60,000 passengers per day, while the 1,088 flights over the three days translate to more than 360 flights daily.

Traffic expected to remain high around mid-August holiday

Traffic is expected to stay elevated in the coming days, as the period around the mid-August holiday (Dekapentavgoustos) is traditionally one of the busiest of the summer for transport.

The increased movement is not limited to air travel. Crete’s ports are also seeing higher traffic, with ferries running at very high capacity as visitor arrivals to the island and traveler movements around the mid-August holiday period reach their peak.
