Strong wind gusts exceed 100 km/h in Crete's Lasithi and Rethymno regions

Strong winds swept across Crete on September 8, 2026, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h recorded in parts of Lasithi and Rethymno, according to data reported by CretaOne.

The strongest gust on the island was measured at 106 km/h in Schinokapsala, Lasithi, as of 17:20 that day, the outlet reported. In the Mariou area of Rethymno, a gust of 101 km/h was recorded, while gusts at Plakias in Rethymno reached 90 km/h. A gust of 77 km/h was logged at Lendas in Heraklion.

The high winds call for extra caution, particularly from drivers, motorcyclists, people near the coastline, and boat owners, CretaOne said. Anyone planning to rent a car in Crete during periods of strong wind should factor in the conditions when travelling on exposed or coastal roads.

The gusts come amid a broader pattern of unsettled autumn weather building across the island. Forecasters had already flagged that northerly winds reaching 8 Beaufort off Crete would mark the shift toward autumn conditions earlier in the week, after several days of clear skies and northerly winds with highs near 33°C.
