Storms and cooler weather set to reach Crete this weekend, forecaster says
A change in weather is expected across Greece from Friday, September 25, with rain and storms first affecting the northwest before spreading to more regions, including Crete, according to a forecast by meteorologist Sakis Arnaoutoglou.
The first area affected will be Corfu, from the late morning hours of Friday, Arnaoutoglou said. As the day progresses, the phenomena are expected to intensify and spread, with locally strong rain and storms forecast overnight in western Greece. The unsettled weather is expected to continue through the weekend, with a possible improvement from Sunday afternoon.
On Friday, showers and storms are expected in Epirus and the northern Ionian, with localized phenomena also forecast in Pella, Pieria and Imathia. By evening, rain is expected to extend to western Sterea, Thessaly, and western and central Macedonia. Arnaoutoglou flagged particular concern for western Greece, where overnight rain and storms may include “some strong phenomena.”
The unstable pattern is set to continue on Saturday, with localized rain possible in Attica, mainly in the northern parts of the region, before clearing by evening. During the evening hours, rain is forecast for eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia and western Crete.
Localized rain is also possible in Attica on Sunday, mainly in the central and northern mountainous areas, while showers are expected across Crete and possibly the Dodecanese. Conditions are forecast to gradually improve from Sunday afternoon. No significant weather phenomena are expected on Monday, September 28, or Tuesday, September 29, according to the forecast data presented by Arnaoutoglou.
Outlook for early October
The weather trend for the first days of October also points to a possible shift in temperature patterns, Arnaoutoglou said. Scattered showers cannot be ruled out early in the month, mainly in the eastern and southern parts of the country, continuing the pattern of autumn showers and falling temperatures already affecting the region.
After October 5, a tendency toward renewed rainfall is emerging, with an emphasis on the northwest. Forecast data also indicate a possible further drop in temperature in central and northern Greece, with the meteorologist noting that the weather could take on a “slightly wintery” feel. In southern Greece, by contrast, there are indications of a temporary rise in temperature around October 4 and 5.
