Samaria station records over 1,000mm of rain in first half of October, meteo.gr data shows

A weather station near Samaria has recorded more than 1,000mm of rain in the first 15 days of October, according to data from meteo.gr, as a new wave of rainfall hit Crete over the past two days.

The fresh rainfall arrived ten days after the previous major storm that struck the island, with the heaviest totals concentrated in western Crete. According to meteo.gr, the rain fell mainly over the past two days, from the morning of Wednesday, October 14, to midday on Thursday, October 15.

The figures come from a network of 65 weather stations that meteo.gr, run by the National Observatory of Athens, operates across the island. A map published by meteo.gr shows the geographical distribution of rainfall recorded during the period.

Meteo.gr highlighted the Samaria station in particular, noting that it had logged more than 1,000mm of rain in just the first 15 days of October. The source did not provide comparative figures for other stations or further detail on the latest storm’s duration or intensity elsewhere on the island.

The new rainfall follows a storm earlier in October that meteorologists ranked among the worst to hit Crete in 20 years, and comes after warnings that a new storm could drop Chania’s average October rainfall within 48 hours. The earlier storm also left the path through Samaria Gorge destroyed, with workers saying its reopening this year is in doubt.
